I first wrote the 3,500-word essay as my second term assignment on Place for the Cambridge diploma in Advanced Creative Writing: Nonfiction. I later workshopped it as a personal essay about my parents’ divorce in my writers groups and submitted it to Longridge Review for the Anne C. Barnhill Prize in Creative Nonfiction. It was my first publication, and the piece was a semi-finalist for the prize.
