My Aunt Was Found Dead In Her Home. My Search To Find Out Why Led Me To A Tragic Truth

Process:

For my first personal essay published in HuffPost, I wanted to work with editor Noah Michelson because he understands LGBTQ+ issues, a key theme of my memoir. I sent him a targeted pitch tied to a timely event (National Coming Out Day), including a brief sample of the opening. Although they don’t usually commission from pitches, he encouraged me to write the full piece.

After feedback from Noah and my writers’ group, I tightened the essay and clarified its tone—even making a major revision after it went through copyediting. Noah supported the changes, and we got it right before publication. I engaged with readers in the comments, gaining valuable insights and encouragement. The process was unconventional but taught me how to shape the narrative to reach a wide audience.
