Process
I first wrote about finding my mother in a meditative state that I thought was death in my journal the day it happened. A few weeks later, in the Kenyon Review Writer’s Workshop for nonfiction, I used that material for a guided writing prompt about sensorial memory. I then rewrote the piece as a 700-word flash essay and workshopped it with my writer’s groups. I submitted it to Under the Gum Tree under their “Food” category. It published a few months later.
