How I bought my wedding dress with my mother in the hospital

Process

As my wedding day approached, my 85-year-old mother was facing surprise
health issues and admitted to the hospital. I had to continue with the preparations even
though I feared the worst might happen before the big day. I wrote an email to my closest
friends sharing my story of shopping for a wedding dress by myself. I then worked that story
into a pitch for the senior editor of Health & Parenting at Insider magazine. She accepted
the story in 30-minutes. I rewrote my 1,200 word email into a 600-word essay that
published the day after my wedding.
